Introduction

Small leaves and responsive growth make Chinese Privet enjoyable to shape and develop as a bonsai. Its shaped outline offers a form to maintain and refine over time. It is supplied in an approximately 18cm pot.

About this bonsai

Its fine branching can be encouraged with regular light pruning. Seasonal leaf changes depend on temperature and growing conditions, and a healthy tree benefits from steady care rather than frequent moves.

Position & light

Provide plenty of natural light and airflow. A sheltered outdoor position suits mild weather. If grown indoors, keep close to a bright window and away from heaters; avoid sudden changes in temperature or light.

Watering

Check the soil frequently and water thoroughly when its upper layer starts to dry. Allow free drainage and avoid prolonged drying or standing water.

Feeding & pruning

Feed during active growth and trim extending shoots to build a balanced canopy. Assess repotting in spring when root growth and soil condition make it necessary.

Winter care

Protect the roots from hard frost, especially in recently imported or unacclimatised stock. A bright, cool, frost-free position is a cautious option; avoid persistently hot, dry rooms.
